Jan Hicks – Iron Age Britons at High Carlingill
March 25 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
High Carlingill
Lunesdale Archaeology Society obtained a lottery grant for a community excavation of the presumed Romano-British settlement at High Carlingill, just south of Low Borrowbridge roman fort. Under the supervision of Solstice Heritage, two 2-week excavations took place in 2018 and 2019. Most of the finds and radiocarbon dates from the roundhouses were 2nd and 3rd century, indicating occupation in the Romano-British period and interaction with the fort. However, the banks enclosing the settlement were dated to the first and second centuries BC. The settlement was, therefore, established in the late Iron Age. In 2021 and 2022 LAS carried out a smaller scale excavation of a mound within one of the enclosure banks and uncovered what appears to be an unusual rectangular building with an apsidal end overlying an earlier roundhouse.
